I Love Me

I love me, I love me
I don’t know about you, but baby I love me
Now everybody say, hey-hey-hey
Oh, hey-hey-hey, I love me
Hey-hey-hey, I love me

I don’t mean to brag, I don’t mean to boast
I love all y’all, but I love me the most
I don’t mean to brag, I don’t mean to boast
I love all y’all, but I love me the most

Go and raise your glass, give yourself a toast
I love all y’all, but I love me the most
I don’t mean to brag, I don’t mean to boast
I love all y’all, but I love me

You’re probably not surprised to find out that research shows listening to “joy songs” positively impacts the brain by releasing all the feel-good hormones and can lower stress and increase a sense of social bonding. I know I wasn’t. But I was surprised by how much I liked this particular “joy song” when I first heard it because I generally dislike happy songs. (Weird, but true.)

In fact, in college, I wrote my senior thesis on music and songwriting which included an entire section devoted to exploring why humans actually enjoy sad and/or angry music as well as more joyful tunes. Not to stray too far off topic, but essentially it’s because we feel more connected and less alone with our pain when someone else can put words to how we are feeling (don’t worry, I’ll write more about this in the future). Which makes sense and I’m totally on board with and usually prefer…

…and yet, here I am, loving this obviously full-of-happy-feels song. I can’t help but sing along anytime I listen to it and as I do, it becomes this kind of self-care, self-love mantra no matter the mood I’m in. If I’m already in a good mood, it just pumps me up a little bit more. If I’m in a bad mood, I can embrace it in a kind of defy-the-people-or-situation-that-put-me-in-a-bad-mood, you-can’t-bring-me-down kind of way.

I think everyone needs at least one song they embrace as their positive-vibe mantra. Pretty sure this is going to be mine for the foreseeable future. There’s just something so grounding about belting out “I don’t know ‘bout you – but I love me!” despite whatever is going on in my day.
